About the Distillery

A more contemporary style, the Salt River Gin brings South African flavours to the fore. Made using the London Dry one shot method, this gin is influenced by Hope on Hopkins’ distillery’s location based in the heart of the Western Cape: their Single Malt Vodka base is redistilled using a range of botanicals including juniper, hand picked kapokbos (or wild rosemary) and buchu from a farm on the Winterhoek Mountains as well as organic citrus peel from the Cederberg.

Botanicals

They make the base spirit for their London Dry and Salt River gins using 100% South African grown malted barley.  All of their gins are then infused using a range of botanicals including:

Juniper, an essential ingredient in all gins, currently sourced from Tuscany, where it is harvested from the hillsides once a year, the ripe berries beaten out of the trees. While juniper is available in South Africa, most of it doesn’t produce berries with enough essential oils to create great flavour.

Angelica root, another botanical common to most gins, sourced from Europe and responsible for marrying together the flavours of all the other botanicals used.

Coriander, a favourite ingredient among distillers: the oil from the seed is the perfect blend for booze, faintly woody yet dominated by citrus flavours, which perfectly complements the juniper. They source their Coriander locally from the Cape.

Citrus, including organic lemon and orange zest from the Cederberg. The peel is hand peeled and hung up to dry in the sun.

Herbs, grown in the winelands just outside Franschhoek.

Fynbos (in the Salt River Gin and in some of their family gins), grown on a farm in the Winterhoek mountains in the foothills of the Cederberg.

Overall the gin boasts plenty of juniper and is distilled with Buchu, which gives it a blackcurrant and earthy flavour.

Perfect Serve

Best served in a gin and tonic with a slice of grapefruit and a sprig of thyme.
