By adjusting the temperature to fit the job, meat can be evenly and thoroughly defrosted more perfectly than you’ve ever experienced. Now that needs to be tested!

A standard packet of 500gr of beef mince will take twice as long in a traditional microwave compared to the NeoChef. Making defrosting of meat a breeze and ensuring you get cooking even quicker.
Defrosting with my previous microwave took up to 20 minutes for a packet of mince; with the Neochef™ LG Microwave with Smart Inverter – Convection Oven I could hardly get all my ingredients together for the Spiced Mince Lettuce-cups recipe below – it took a whopping 12 minutes (including turning the meat over for defrosting).
The defrost setting is pre-programmed for beef, poultry, fish and bread. I used the first setting (meat) on the defrost function.
Here’s how you can do it:
- Place the 500gr beef mince in a microwave safe container.
- Place the container in to the Neochef microwave oven. Select the Inverter Defrost function.
- Turn the dial until “500 grams” is visible on the display.
- Press start.
- At the beep, turn the food over to ensure even defrosting.
- Once the defrosting cycle is complete, let the softened beef mince stand for 5-10 minutes before using.
Spiced Mince in Baby Lettuce Leaf-cups

However I will remain a foodie at heart and take pleasure in the joys of eating and sharing a dining experience. The NeoChef is making easy, healthy and convenient meals possible. Amelia sits on the kitchen counter and I daze into a pan stirring something in the hope that it delivers on the chef-qualification which I obtained over a decade ago. And what’s better than one-pot cooking and the opportunity to let the savoury juices dribble down your fingers as you lean in for another bite of a zero carbs feast? Take a look at the spicy beef mince parcels which is becoming a staple in our household, only second to the “bunless burger” we’ve managed to perfect by now. Some say lazy cooking, I say smart cooking; smart like the Neochef™ LG Microwave with Smart Inverter – Convection Oven – it even has SMART in the title…
500gr defrosted Beef Mince
1/4 cup Hoisin sauce
2 tablespoons Soy Sauce
1/2 tablespoon Olive Oil
1 tablespoon fresh Ginger – peeled and grated
3 Spring Onions, finely chopped
2 large Garlic Cloves – minced
1 Teaspoon dried Chilli Flakes
We love to use the small lettuce cups from the Woolworths Baby Gem Lettuce Hearts. They are sturdy enough to hold a generous scoop of spiced mince mixture and the core is sweet and tender. One packet will take you a long way in building these morsels of yum!
Dress the lettuce-cups with finely shredded carrots, chopped herbs such as purple basil/coriander/flat-leaf parsley and a drizzle of Woolworths Sriracha Tangy Mayonnaise.
- Ensure the beef mince is defrosted and ready for use.
- Combine all the ingredients, par for the spring onion, and stir it into the mince to created a flavoured mixture.
- Place the beef mince and seasoning mixture in a microwave-safe container and cover with clingfilm (ensure you poke holes in the clingfilm for steam to escape). Ensure the mince is not one big lump of meat – otherwise it will turn into a massive meatball in the microwave.
- Microwave on full power (on Grill Combi function: GC-3: 440 W) for three minutes.
- Remove the container. Stir with the fork, breaking up the mince again, cover and return to the microwave for another three minutes. Take care when removing the container as it will be very hot. Break up any clumps of mince again.
- Repeat this process at least three times, or until the meat is cooked.
- During the cooking process, check the seasoning of the beef mince – adjust accordingly. Should you want a spicier mince mixture you can always add more chilli flakes or a dash of hot Tabasco pepper sauce.
- Once the mince is cooked, leave the clingfilm on the container for a few minutes. Let the cooked mince cool slightly and then use a fork to separate and break down the lumps.
- Check the seasoning (at this point season with salt and pepper).
- Remove the layers of the Gem Baby Lettuce and wash each leaf and set aside.
- Assemble the lettuce-cups by placing a generous spoon of mince filling in each cup and dress with your choice of shredded vegetables (carrots/cabbage or baby spinach), fresh herbs (mint/basil/coriander or parsley) and a dressing (flavoured mayonnaise or home-made dressing or a dash of Chipotle Tabasco sauce.
Assemble the lettuce-cups as you are eating. Preparing the cups too long in advance could result in the lettuce going limp with the topping and dressing.
